How to deal with abbreviations?

Post by Bernd Welter »

Hi there,

sometimes players wish a more sophisticated handling of abbreviations such as
  • Dr.
  • Bgm. (german Bürgermeister)
  • Ing. (another german title: Ingenieur)
Can you give us a short comment on
  • How does xLocate deal with abbreviations in general?
  • Is there a list of supported abbreviations? Can we extend the list?
  • Are such abbreviations part of the binary map data? And if so: what can you tell us about this?
Best regards,
Bernd

The abbreviations are part of the binary map data, depends on the language (not the country) e.g. st is in englisch the abbreviation for street and in german for sankt. If you like to extend the abbreviation table you have to report it to the data department.
An abbreviation is replaced by a full word in the index and the xLocate replaces it during the preprocessing. So if a abbreviation is detected the score is 100.
By the way Bgm-Bürgermeister and Dr-Doktor are alread part of the german abbreviation table.
