we are currently evaluating the quality of new datasources such as OSM / Open Street Map. One of the countries we are evaluating is Japan. For those of you who are interested in this special area I recommend to subscribe this post - we will add updated information from time to time.
If you want to test the map on your own let us know - we'll offer test services for you.
For those who already test: Feedback about your tests is appreciated.
And here some kick-off info:
- The current Japan/OSM map is a project map (difference to product map: product maps are updated at least once per year. Project maps are not updated automatically).
- Japan and Europe are very different therefore we need to consider a few things:
- Geocoding (better than on city level) is impossible or very very limited, because of the address structure in Japan. Which relies on building names without an specific system.
- Route planning is possible, but some streets attributes are absent (e.g. turning restrictions).
- The labeling is not uniform. Mostly in Japanese, but sometimes also written in Latin scripture.
- Tracking only: ok
- Tracking and Routing: ok, with uncertainties in the quality. Other vendors are facing the same problem.
MapMatching does work.
Reversegeocoding to retrieve an address on street level is not possible or very very limited. The reason for this is the lack of street and address information in the map. Speedlimits do not exist. - AB Routing: ok, with uncertainties in the quality. Other vendors are facing the same problem. Speedlimits do not exist.
- Dealer Locator: Through a lack of exact geocoding this is only possible if the customer provides the dealer coordinates.
- (Sequence) Optimization: Technically there isn´t a problem. The missing street attributes result in poor trips.
- Currently we do not support 100% of the japanese characters
